These lovely photos of Honey and Sugar, Chinese Dwarf Hamsters, were sent in by Eva from Grimsby. We think they look very cute, and the photos are also a good example of the difference between Chinese hamsters and other breeds... they have longer tails! Below is Eva's story about her cute hams.
My friend Katies got 2 chinese hamsters and she got them form pets at home and i realllyyyy wanted a hamster so one day i just asked my mum if i could have a hamster, and she said yes straight away.. i was preeeetty shocked.. but after looking up about hamsters and how to look after them etc. we decided to go and get them.
We decided to get two females as there was only one male in the cage, we knew they sometimes may fight, so we got two cages instead of one just incase, and because one may of got ill or for some other reasons they may need to be split up, but we never expected this... Exactly one week later, I was getting my hamsters out, but only Honey was out, (I called them Honey and Sugar by the way)
Sugar wasn't out and with her being the more dominant of the two, Sugar normally came out and Honey followed but Honey was snuffling about in the corner, I was a bit confused and though I should check on Sugar, so I looked in her bed for her, she was sat under the often leaking water bottle.. Then she sort of got up and turned around a bit and under her was a pink bean ..
I knew about male hamsters boy bits and thought.. Maybe they made a mistake and its actually a he but it was definitly a girl as I was soon to find out... because the pink bean was moving...!! So I ran through to my Mum with my heart being to fast for comfort and said, Sugars had babies shes had babies..
Mum didnt exactly believe me, i Think she was just a bit shocked, but yep Sugar had 2 babies.. under the water bottle.. (yes the often leaking one). So we took the water bottle out and covered the hole and moved it to a more sutiable loacation, we don't know if she had more babies, and maybe she ate some, but we've only got 2..! We took Honey out of that cage and moved her into the spare one, turns out Sugar must have mated with the male at the shop..! We did lots of researching on the internet of how to care for the little beans..!
They grew very quickly and were healthy but we often had the problem with the bottle situation, we put in a bowl with a very small amount of water in it, but this was tricky too because Sugar kept burrying it so we put in the bottle again because the babies were bigger and had more freedom, sugar kept pushing the sawdust around it though so it all soaked up the water, but luckily Sugar moved her babies if it got wet..
They have grown up fully now, they all live seperately now and are happy and healthy..!!
