Princess is a long haired roan. When she was tiny she looked like a little fur ball and so we called her Pom-Pom, but she has now grown quite big.
She is the most reserved of our hamsters and although she is friendly and quite happy to be cuddled she definitely acts like a Princess in so many ways. When coming out of her cage for a cuddle or a run around, she preferred to do it her own way, not liking being picked up out of her cage but climbing on to a hand from the cage door.
She is a ‘clean freak’ and spends hours just grooming and washing her fur. She is also a bit of an exercise obsessive too, and when she was young we had to limit her use of the wheel because she would just run and run until she exhausted herself and just collapsed in her wheel to sleep it off.
We have to be careful about breeding Princess as Roan’s carry the 'Wh' White bellied gene (anopthalmic white). If we bred Princess to another Roan, or any other hamster carrying the white bellied gene, she would have white babies with small or no eyes.
As Princess has got older she has lost all (or most) of her Princess ways. She is so friendly and quite happy now to be picked up out of her cage. She spends less time on her wheel and cleaning herself, though she is still quite obsessive about both. She has a nasty habit of chewing on plastic shelves, toys and foodbowls and so we have had to take her out of her plastic cage.
Princess has had a litter of pups to Spud, producing 3 beautiful girls.
