Ice was bought as one half of a pair of brothers (we thought at the time, thought they later turned out to be sisters... a reacurring theme we seem to have with our hamsters, buying them as once sex and finding out they are another!) Ice is a Russian Dwarf Sapphire Pearl Winter White.
We saw them and decided it would be interesting to keep two dwarves. They were great fun to watch togehter, though after about a month they began fighting, it getting so bad that we had to separate them. As Arti's parents were already besotted with Smirnoff, they offered to adopt her. Smirnoff came on leaps and bounds once separated from Ice who was the more dominant of the two. Smirnoff won a prize at the 2007 Rotherham Hamster Show. You can see pictures of Smirnoff in the Your Hamsters section, where you can submit your own hamster photos.
Once separated from Smirnoff, Ice became quite vicious towards us and Arti was bitten every time he tried to handle her. As the agression was quite bad (Ice would literally hunt you out to bite if you even went near the cage!) we decided to hold back on the handling for a while. We also considered getting a 'Beware of the Dwarf Hamster' sign for the house.
A little later we noticed her behaviour changed as we went near the cage and put our hands in to change food/clean out etc.
Arti became a little brave and decided to try handling her (you could see the fear in his eyes!). Lo and behold, Ice was back to her soft ways and craves attention and handling (though Arti is convinced Ice is just lulling him in to a false sense of security, waiting to turn on him one day!)
