Today we visited the Northern Hamster Club’s show in Hoyland and had a very enjoyable and interesting time. We learned a lot of information in a very short space of time, and if you are planning on developing your hamster hobby I would well recommend attending a local show.
Princess was left to her own devices for most of the day and as soon as we returned she left her nest of her own accord to ask us where we had been. As soon as she had left the nest we saw the most amazing thing:
One of the pups buried out of the side of the nest and, even though only four days old, took a little journey! He travelled halfway down the cage. Princess had returned to her nest but was unaware that the little chap had made a break for it. We watched whilst he worked his way over a wooden tube and then retuned straight to the nest the way he had come out! Mum was still totally unaware, and no doubt we will have to keep a close eye on that young fellow as he is obviously much too adventurous!
The pups are starting to fill out now a little and on some of them, their pink backs have turned a darker colour. We can also start to see the beginnings of fur across their bodies. The fur will rapidly develop. We noticed that their ears, which were close against the head when born, have started to prick up and, thank goodness, the ones I was able to observe today all had clearly defined eyes. Fingers are staying crossed though.
We did notice that there are noticeable differences between the sizes of the pups. One appears very small and weak and so we are hoping that this one gets a few good feeds from Mum and makes it through.
Mum’s tea tonight was supplemented with oatibix with milk to help keep her strong and producing enough milk to feed her babies.
