Princess spent the morning relaxing and building up her nest. We gave her a treat of bread and warm milk which she nibbled at before retuning to her nest.
At about 1.00pm, whilst I was working on my computer, I noticed that she appeared to be furiously cleaning herself (not unusual for Princess) then she moved away from her bed looking slightly confused and I noticed one tiny pup in her nest. I managed to take a quick photo before retreating to let her get on with the task in hand. I had read that hamsters normally give birth in the evening, so was quite surprised by this early event!
At intervals over the next few hours we can hear a little series of squeaks followed by a renewed bout of cleaning from Princess to let us know more babies have arrived. I managed to get some photos of her giving birth through the side of the cage, again making very sure she was unaware that she was being watched.
We will have to be very careful of disturbing her for the next few days. If threatened a nursing Mum could eat or pouch her pups.
