Today we have carried on the feeding of the little runt who Rosie has insisted we name Nubby. We took some comparison photos of her against a coin and then another (not one of the largest hamsters. She is about half of the size of the others.
Though Nubby is feeding regularly she seems to be getting weaker and we are quite worried as she seems to be wheezing when she breathes and her pouches will billow out when she does this. At one time when we are feeding milk from a dropper she suddenly collapses and goes still. We are unsure whether she is just exhausted and has fallen asleep or if it is something more serious. As she seems to be blue around the mouth we gently blow onto Nubby’s face and after a few seconds she gives a big wheeze and struggles up.
We take her to the vets urgently and it appears she has a chest infection and so she is prescribed antibiotics. The dosage is so small that we have to get the tiniest drop on the end of the dropper twice a day. She doesn’t like this at all and so we have to make sure she gets a nice feed before and after. We have been feeding her organic vegetable human baby food with added milk mixed in as she is so weak and she is enjoying this very much. We also for a treat are giving her some crushed shelled sunflower seeds and pine nuts which she hoovers up from our hands.
The other pups now are following Mum and showing an interest in us as well so we have started handling them for short periods to promote tameness. I think they are going to be very friendly if they take the lead from Mum.
