As the pups grow, Bramble gets into stranger and stranger positions to make sure all of them are able to get milk. Again, in the first photo you can see the little runt on the outside of the scramble, furthest away from Mum’s milk. With any large litter there will often be a runt and, as this is smaller and weaker than the other pups will often lose the battle over food and the best places near Mum. We watch carefully and see that she does eventually make her way over for a feed.
The other pups are growing stronger and stronger. Their escapes last longer and even when Mum puts them back in the nest they just totter back out again. It is quite funny to see them stagger about and, as Bramble has built up the nest with high sides, they often tumble down the sides before making a mad break for freedom.
Mum continues to bring food back for the pups and place it around the nest, but even she cannot imagine that her babies would be able to wolf down a ‘Bonio’ dog biscuit that we put in for her to gnaw on does she? Well, yes she does and places it in the corner of the nest in case any of her brood feel extra hungry.
